Management Team

Greg McCunn, Director and CEO
Greg McCunn has over 25 years’ experience in the mining industry. On April 1, 2019 he was appointed Director and CEO of Galiano Gold. Most recently he was CEO of Alio Gold, a junior gold mining company with operations in Mexico and Nevada. Prior to joining Alio Gold, Greg was CFO at Galiano Gold from 2011 to 2017, during which time the Company financed the construction of the Asanko Gold Mine, executed the first phase of construction, completed commissioning and achieved commercial production. Greg was also CFO for Farallon Mining until it was sold to Nyrstar in early 2011. Mr. McCunn’s background includes technical, operational and corporate development roles with Teck Resources, Placer Dome and junior mining companies in Canada and Australia. He is a Professional Engineer and holds a Bachelor of Applied Science degree in Metallurgical Engineering and a Master’s degree in Business Administration.

Fausto Di Trapani, EVP & Chief Financial Officer

Fausto Di Trapani, a Chartered Accountant, joined Galiano in 2012 as Executive: Finance and has played a major role in the transformation of the Company’s Finance function from late stage exploration through project development and production to the multi-jurisdictional fully integrated function it is today. This has included the deployment of a group wide ERP system to improve forecasting and budgetary controls, securing the Red Kite project finance facility and leading the Company’s procurement processes to bring the Asanko Gold Mine into production on time and under budget. During his 20+ year career, Fausto has held a number of senior financial management roles at significant listed resource companies including Mantra Resources, Norilsk Nickel International and BHP Billiton. He holds an Honours Bachelor of Accounting Sciences degree.

Matt Badylak, EVP & Chief Operating Officer

Mr. Badylak is a seasoned mining professional with 20 years of operations experience including a number of senior management roles with Eldorado Gold. In his most recent role as General Manager Kisladag Mine, Mr. Badylak was responsible for multiple cost saving initiatives and optimization of the heap leaching operations, allowing the company to avoid construction of a capital-intensive milling facility and extend the operation of the heap leach. Prior to his role at Kisladag, Matt held various corporate and operations management roles in Eldorado Gold, including Managing Director of China Operations and prior to that, General Manager of the Tanjianshan Gold Mine located on the Tibetan Plateau in China’s Qinghai Province. Prior to Eldorado Gold, he worked in various technical roles across Australia and Asia. He holds a Bachelor of Science in Extractive Metallurgy & Chemistry from Murdoch University in Perth and is a member of the Australian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy.

Todd Romaine, EVP Sustainability

Todd Romaine has over 20 years experience in the environmental, social and community aspects of the resource extractive sectors as well as public and aboriginal governments. Most recently he worked as the Chief Sustainability Officer for Danakali Limited, an Australian junior potash mining company that is developing a 200-year Sulphate of Potash deposit in Eritrea. Prior to this role, Todd was the Vice President, Corporate Social Responsibility & Government Relations at Nevsun Resources Ltd, a Canadian mid-tier mining company and played a central role developing leading edge CSR initiatives to establish social license and responsible operations in challenging jurisdictions. Previously, he worked in senior management roles at Enbridge Pipelines Inc., Inuvialuit Regional Corporation and the Government of Nunavut. Todd holds designations with the Canadian Institute of Planners, International Right of Way Association and has a Master’s of International Relations, a Master’s of Leadership, a Bachelor of Science in Environmental Planning, and a Bachelor of Arts in Environmental Studies.

Mike Begg, Senior Vice President, Technical Services

Mike Begg is a Professional Natural Scientist (Geological Science) with over 25 years of experience in the African resources sector. He has extensive experience as a geologist in mining and exploration, having been involved in greenfields and mine site exploration. During his career he has held a number of management positions, including Chief Geologist, Technical Services Manager, General Manager and Operations Director. Mike brings extensive technical and managerial experience to Galiano Gold. He holds a BSc degree in Geochemistry and Geology and an Honours degree in Economic Geology.

Paul Klipfel, Senior Vice President, Exploration
Paul Klipfel has 40 years of exploration experience in a wide variety of geologic settings and deposit types. Most of his work for the past 13 years has been in Ghana and other countries of West Africa. He was an original mapper on the Esaase project for Keegan Resources and has been a consultant to many companies over the past 17 years in West Africa, North and South America, Australia, and Asia. He also served as President for Abzu Gold and as Chief Geologist / COO for Ashanti Gold. Dr. Klipfel holds a Ph.D. in Economic Geology from Colorado School of Mines and M.S. degrees in Mineral Economics from Colorado School of Mines and Geology from University of Idaho.
Markus Felderer, Senior Vice President, Corporate Development

Markus Felderer has over 25 years of experience in finance roles. Most recently he was Vice President, Corporate Development at Alio Gold. Prior to that he was Managing Director, Investment Banking, at Canaccord Genuity, where he led an M&A and equity business focused solely on the mining sector. Previously, he led HSBC's Metals & Mining Advisory/M&A business in the Americas. During his time in investment banking, he provided a broad range of clients globally with financial and strategic analyses and advice regarding growth and financing strategies. Prior to investment banking, Mr. Felderer worked at Teck Cominco Ltd. in business development where he conducted evaluations of mining projects and companies. Markus holds a Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) designation and has an MBA and a Bachelor of Applied Science, Mining and Mineral Process Engineering.

Sacha Iley, Vice President, Human Resources

Sacha Iley has over 16 years experience in Human Resources. Most recently she was Vice President, Human Resources and Workforce Development at NovaCopper, an exploration company with projects in Alaska. Prior to joining NovaCopper, Sacha was Vice President, Human Resources at NOVAGOLD, a development stage company with projects in Alaska and British Columbia. Previously, she held various Human Resources roles at Placer Dome, including roles in the corporate office, with the construction team and at numerous operating mines. In her various roles at Placer Dome, Sacha worked in Australia, Canada, South Africa and Tanzania. Sacha holds a Bachelor Degree from the University of British Columbia.
